Plant Based Diet

For some a plant based diet is what they know and what they love. For others, they know about the health benefits of a plant based diet but have not made the switch because it seems daunting.

One place to start is learning about plant based options is the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet is rich in produce, legumes, healthy grains and healthy oils. Yes, small amounts of fish and meat are still part of the Mediterranean diet but this is a great place to start.

Minimally Processed

We are proud that Way Beyond Cake’s cookies and bars are “minimally processed.” We understand the obvious health benefits of a minimally processed food, but thought it was worth explaining in greater detail. There is nothing artificial in our cookies or bars, no fake flavorings, colorings or synthetic ingredients but that explanation merely scratches the surface!

Baking, roasting, drying, freezing or smoking foods are all methods to process a food. But these either preserve a food or make it safe, and even more delicious, to eat. Food safety is important.

What happens sometimes with snack foods is that extreme processes are added to create a shelf stable, highly portable product that the consumer does not have to prepare. Processes like over mixing and breaking down the raw ingredients, bleaching or adding chemicals to make it last on shelf for a very long time, are considered extreme. The reason why vitamins and minerals are added back into foods like cereal, bread and crackers is because over processing robs the ingredients of their nutrients.

Whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables are all better than refined flours, juices and canned items. However, our grab and go lifestyle does force our hand to buy processed items. Choosing Way Beyond Cake cookies and bars is a great first step.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is the “family” of proteins found in wheat, rye and barley. Glutenin and Gliadin are the actual protein names. More and more people are aware of gluten as an ingredient or know someone on a gluten-free diet either by diagnosis or by choice.
